History Colorado Low Sensory Mornings

Low sensory mornings at History Colorado are for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and sensory processing differences and allow those kids to have fun and enjoy an interactive learning experience in a comfortable and accepting environment!

historycolorado6For this, the museum will be closed to the general public, attendance numbers limited, and sounds throughout the exhibit turned down.

Why History Colorado?

If you haven’t been to History Colorado since they moved a few years ago, you’re in for a treat!   Far from the sort of dry and boring location they had a block north, the History Colorado Center is bright and welcoming and VERY kid friendly

I was blown away at how educational and flat out fun this museum is – my 12 and 14 year old deemed it the “best museum in Denver”!

historycolorado5TIP: Park in the arts center parking across the street, it’s affordable and simple to park in with an entrance on 12th.

Some of our favorite exhibits were:

A huge rolling “time machine” with videos that you roll over a huge map of Colorado on the floor – the videos correspond to the geographical area and the time your kids select.

historycolorado4Adults seem to love a yearbook from 1918 that you can put your picture in after you insert your photo into hair and clothing styles of the time

Wooden eggs that you harvest from the chickens and take to a cool interactive market with products to trade.

The interactive Model T Ford that you “drive” through the country side and experience weather (you get a little spray of water in the rain) and bumps along the way!

There’s a mining shaft you “ride” down into the mine with a wall of “explosives” you use to “blow up” the mine.

Dress up as the “Barrel Man” with barrels you can put on.

Model of Denver where you can swap out buildings depending on the era.

Low Sensory morning is also a wonderful opportunity for parents of children with special needs to make connections with other families!

Sheila Cook, one of the moms attending the morning said, “We found out about it through our Occupational Therapist at School. Our child has sensory concerns around loud noises, crowds and waiting in lines. The museum does a fantastic job at addressing the noise levels, limiting the number of attendees and no lines for getting into the building. The History Museum is our favorite event!”

Admission is free and space is limited for Sensory morning.
