Military Appreciation Month #ChevySalutes

My dad passed away 8 years ago. After he passed his longtime partner would send me boxes and boxes of “stuff.” She would send things that were important like photos and slides, some things that weren’t like stacks of old bills and magazines, but as I dug deeper into all this stuff, I learned more about my dad than I ever did when he was alive. I knew he was in the Army when he was younger, but had no idea his Uncle was as well. My great uncle Bill was in the Army during World War II and because his brother (my grandfather) was his closest living relative, they received war bonds and rations and even got a letter from the White House!

May is Military Appreciation Month and I find it fitting that I’m uncovering all sorts of fun facts about my family and our history with the United States Army now. Looking through the 1962 Fort Leonard Wood US Army Training Center, 5th Battalion, 2D Regiment 1962 yearbook, I’m discovering all sorts of pieces to the puzzle that made up my dad. I always knew him as a big hippie. Who followed the Grateful Dead and had long hair and lived outside of San Francisco. I had never seen a picture of him without his long beard until I found this Army photo!
