Guest post: Picking a car for your Teenager

You never thought the day would come, but now your teenager is grown up and they can drive. As much as you would still like to drive them to wherever they need to go, they don’t want to be seen with you, and you are too busy to keep up with all of their extracurricular activities. The reality that hits you is that you may need to get your teenager a car. When that time comes, there are some ideas to keep in mind when looking for a car for your teenager.

New vs. Used
The first thing you need to decide is whether or not your teenager is getting a new car or a used car. Both have their advantages and disadvantages.

New Car
With a new car, you will not have maintenance issues to deal with because of the warranties that come with them. This will keep you at ease knowing your teenager probably won’t get stranded. You will also be able to keep the car longer for college, or to pass it down to the next one in line. New cars will cost more in your monthly payments and on insurance, so take this into consideration.

Used Car
Getting a used car might not be a bad idea for your new driver. It will be more affordable both in payments and in insurance. You can still purchase warranties for them too. The downside is that you will have to do more to keep up with the maintenance in order to keep it in good and safe drivable condition. A used car can also be an excellent decision because your son or daughter can learn, and make mistakes with the cheaper car. For example, it would be much less expensive to fix the used car, if they happened to bump a pole or scrape the vehicle.

What Kind of Car is Good for Your Teenager
When it comes to your choices in new or used cars, you want safety and reliability to be some of your key factors. You may want to consider a smaller economy car or a larger SUV or Crossover.

Economy Car
A small economy car that will get great gas mileage and will be easy to drive might be a good idea. Consider popular models known for safety and affordability such as the Hyundai Elantra, the Kia Forte, the Ford Focus or the Honda Civic. Furthermore, another excellent choice is the Toyota Corolla being very reliable, and many being able to run for over 200,000 miles. Economy cars are excellent because they have very affordable monthly payments, some being around 200 dollars a month if you have good credit. Additionally, these economy cars have fairly low insurance rates, and also great resale values.

SUV or Crossover
Size could be concern for both safety and functionality, so you may want to consider an SUV or Crossover. Some of the more popular vehicles known for safety and fuel economy are the Ford Escape, the Toyota RAV 4, the Hyundai Santa Fe and the Nissan Rogue. Suv’s may be a bit more stylish then the standard economy car.

Overall you have have the choice to decide which automobile you’d like to purchase for your son or daughter. Try and keep these factors in mind though, to ensure your teen safety, and also to make the most of your money.
