Terry Bison Ranch – just an hour and a half to yee haa fun!

One of the things I love most about writing for Denver Parent is “discovering” the hidden or not as well publicized as it should be Senator's“gems” – the fun things you do with your family and wonder “how did I not know about this?” Terry Bison Ranch is one of those!

What a fun experience! This historic ranch where Roosevelt stayed at the Terry Ranch as a guest of F.E. Warren, the first Territorial Governor of Wyoming, in 1903 and 1910 and where famed chef Bobby Flay and the Food Network called the burger served at the Senator’s Restaurant, the Best Burger in Wyoming1

The highlight of the ranch is their our own private train where you  can ride out to the middle of our bison herd and feed the bison as well as cross the state line! (just a little bit!) It was so fabulous, one or two pictures didn’t really tell the story – here are some of the great pictures we took:

Along with the short train ride we took, they also offer a Sunday Lunch Train on their old fashioned dining car!

We also really enjoyed our authentic Wyoming horseback ride, and see the prairie the way the pioneers did when they went through this area in covered wagons. I’ve never mastered photography while riding horseback, but trust me it was wonderful – really made you DSC_0047feel the way pioneers would have felt – with the open prairie and the clouds rolling in. We were treated to a downpour but after our ride (wasn’t that nicely arranged?) and we were having a wonderful lunch at Senators, the steakhouse restaurant on the property.

Kids can catch their own fish in our private stocked pond, and they’ll clean and cook the catch for the kids (and you!) and there were many other fun things like old time photo studio and a fabulous collection of animals – some native and some not (see the picture! ha ha).

If you don’t want to do the trip in a day (which is really quite do-able) you can stay in their RV park, or enjoy one of the historic cabins.
