Star Trek Into Darkness: family review

Another Star Trek film rocks into theaters this weekend and Star Trek Into Darkness doesn’t disappoint.  Without giving away anything good, the plot centers around the crew of the Enterprise finding an startrek1unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction.

It’s way more complicated than that, and frankly too action-packed to describe, but I left the theater wondering if my kids would enjoy it.

First and foremost it’s non-stop action. It’s intense and in places there is a lot of hand to hand combat and implied violence, but almost nothing specific is shown. A bit of blood, but no graphic scenes and the one (eeek) scene is all audio (but it’s really graphic audio). I would recommend covering your kids ears for that one – without giving anything away, it’s late into the movie and is when you find out how bad the bad guy really is!

The only good time for a bathroom break (I skipped this) was maybe when they return to earth halfway through the movie, but even that has a lot of good plot development. Perhaps good to get your kids to go before you go into the theatre!

startrek2Even without graphic violence, there are a few fairly tame swear words,  some sexuality (although no nudity, just bras and undies), there is implied mass death, and a lot of intense emotion.

That all being said, its all broken up with some really great humor –  some a bit lofty (Star Trek geek references and intellectual quotes), but enough that there is a lot of laughter and visual humor along with the action.

It’s a really loud movie as well, so if your child is sensitive to noise, be aware of that.

All in all it’s a really fun movie and full of adrenaline for the whole family! It’s rated PG-13 and I’d say that’s just about right.
