If you’re like me, then you’re only marginally familiar with Lacrosse and maybe not even aware that Denver has a professional Lacrosse team, the “Denver Outlaws” whose owner is none other than the Bronco’s Pat Bowlen.

Newcomers often mistakenly believe that it has Canadian or French origins, but there is a tremendous amount of pride and respect for the sports Native American Indian roots. As you fall in love with the modern sport always remember to respect its past and its origins.

The sports roots are still preserved in many ways as Native American tribes across the country have teams, and the Iroquois nation has its own international team, and competes as a sovereign nation.

The Denver Outlaws kicked off their inaugural season on May 20, 2006 by setting the Major League Lacrosse (MLL) attendance record, driving 13,167 lacrosse fans into INVESCO Field at Mile High -and that was just the beginning! As a first year expansion team, the Outlaws captured the Western Conference Championship with an overall record of 11-2, sent five players to the MLL All-Star game and delivered hard-hitting action to nearly 70,000 Outlaws fans over the course of the home season.

Since then, the Outlaws have made the playoffs each consecutive season and continue to set new professional lacrosse attendance records. In 2010, the Outlaws’ annual 4th of July game brought on a total of 22,433 fans!

The Outlaws roster has been filled with some of the biggest stars in the game. All Star players like Brian Langtry, Brendan Mundorf, Matt Bocklet, Jesse Schwartzman and Lee Zink represent Denver as one of the most talented teams in the MLL.

Lacrosse is the fastest growing sport in America. The fact that everyone can play, Men, Women, Children, makes it very appealing.

Lacrosse Terminology:

Bull– An offensive power move in which the shooter pushes the defender towards the goal in an attempt to keep the defender off-balance and get a better shot on goal
Cradle– Method used to keep the ball inside the pocket of the stick by rocking it back and forth
Crease– The nine-foot radius containing the goal in which offensive players cannot enter. Shooters or their teammates cannot stand on (or inside) the line or their goals won’t count
Ride or Riding– Defending a clear; an attempt to stop the team in possession from clearing the ball
Roll Dodge– More typical of an attackman’s move; driving with the stick in one hand, while rolling with back to defender to free hands for a pass or shot on goal
Split Dodge– When an offensive player with the ball changes direction by moving the stick from one hand to the other in a crossover motion, to lead the defender in the opposite direction
Two-point arc– The area with a 15-yard radius from the center of the goal line from which goals are worth two points. Also, the line behind which players have to remain until the faceoff is possessed
Takeaway Check– An attempt to strip the offensive player of the ball using the defenseman’s stick
